The workspace
You own your documents outright. Every one is a markdown file with frontmatter in a git repository you control: hosted, every save is a commit; locally, it is a write to the folder.
Typed documentsDocuments have shape without rigidity. type picks the schema: pages, tasks, decisions, specs, meetings, launches, runbooks, postmortems and more, or your own types from notdocs.config.json.
A Notion-like editor that respects your files. A toolbar that floats or pins, a Read face and a Source face, images pasted into the page, fences that draw, and a save that changes only the lines you touched.
Links and backlinksRename or move a page and nothing breaks. [[wikilinks]] and markdown links are indexed as written, the Links tab lists what points at a document, and a move rewrites every link to it in the same commit.
Start from the right shape. Every built-in template, from a task to an SLA, and your own in docs/_templates/.
A board, a table, a calendar or a gallery with no database behind it. A fenced block filters, sorts and groups documents by their frontmatter and renders them as the view you ask for.
CommentsComments your agents can act on. Threads on a document, stored as YAML in the repository, so an agent reads the review, does the work and resolves it.
Folders, pins and undoThe sidebar is the repository's folder tree, nothing more. Drag to move, rename inline, pin what you open often, and undo a move or a delete.
Edits that meet
An agent never overwrites your work. Work on one branch at a time; when two edits to one document meet, a three-way merge combines them or reports the conflict instead of losing a side.
See every change, and undo any of them. Each change to a document, by a person or an agent, with a +N −M count and the diff one click away.
Agents catch up without re-reading everything. A change feed pushes edits to every open window and to notdocs changes --follow, with a cursor an agent polls for what changed since it last looked.
Type together, and watch agents edit alongside you. A document open in several browsers is one session with everybody's carets, the server writes the file after a pause, and an agent's edit lands in the session merged.
SearchFind the page you half remember. Full-text search for the exact phrase, semantic search over embeddings for the meaning, for people and agents alike.
Agents
Give your agent the same workspace you use. One tool per operation, over stdio locally and streamable HTTP hosted; Claude connects over OAuth, and an agent that runs unattended uses a project token scoped to read or write.
CLIEvery operation from the terminal. Against a local folder or a hosted workspace, with the same merges and the same history.
Workspace assistantAn assistant that works inside your project and asks first. Ask about it, draft documents, turn a spec into tasks or rewrite a selection; it runs with your permissions and shows what it will write before it writes.
SKILL.md and llms.txtHand an agent one URL and it sets everything up. Instructions a coding agent fetches to install the CLI, initialise the repository and connect MCP by itself.
Documents that leave the workspace
Write contracts, invoices and proposals in markdown. Letters, memos, reports, terms, privacy policies, NDAs, DPAs and SLAs, validated as MDD, with letterheads and signature blocks.
Word, HTML and PDF exportSend them as Word or PDF. Export any document as a Word file or as a print-ready HTML page, with letterheads, page numbers and signature blocks.
Moving in and running it
Move in from Notion in one command. A Notion export becomes typed markdown documents, with databases as frontmatter and links rewritten.
Import from ObsidianYour vault is already most of the way there. An Obsidian vault keeps its files; notdocs adds ids, types and the workspace on top.
Import from WordA .docx becomes a page. Headings, lists, tables and links converted, its pictures stored as images.
Publish a handbook or a docs site by setting one key. Organizations with a subdomain, a GitHub App, members and guests, documents shared by link or published as a site on your own domain, with a markdown copy at every page's .md address.
Work offline, free, with no account. The daemon runs on your machine against any folder, and the same CLI and MCP server point at a hosted workspace when you link one.
What it does not do
There are no mobile or desktop apps; the workspace is a web app, and the CLI is the offline path. There are no relations, formulas or rollups between documents; query blocks filter, sort and group by frontmatter. A shared editing session needs a server that can hold it: the daemon and the hosted service can. See the comparison with Notion for more.
